Fees and Tuition
All fees are payable in U.S. funds drawn on a U.S. correspondent bank only. Foreign students should obtain an International Money Order in U.S. dollars. All checks must be payable to Marrowstone Music Festival.
Application Fee These fees must accompany your application:
NEW APPLICATION DATES 
- $50 for applications submitted before May 1st, 2008.
- $75 for applications submitted after May 1st, 2008.
- Add $40 USD if applying from outside of North America
Tuition/Room & Board
- Two-week tuition is $1,750 USD, due by July 1st, 2008.
- Single room surcharge is $250 USD; subject to availability.
- Off-Campus Option: Students with residence in the Bellingham area have the option to live off-campus. Off-campus tuition includes meals and costs $1,350 USD for the two weeks.
- Students who participate in Western Chamber Days will receive a $200 discount on Marrowstone tuition. Western Chamber Days takes place a week before Marrowstone in Bellingham, WA lead by Grant Donnellan, Marrowstone Violin Faculty.
- Tuition Deposit: $300 USD - must be received within two week receipt of acceptance letter (via email). This deposit is applied towards tuition but is non-refundable if the student does not attend Marrowstone.
- Damage Deposit: $250 USD – due within two weeks of receipt of acceptance letter. This deposit will be returned after Marrowstone if no damage to facilities, key replacements charges, or lost sheet music is assessed against the student. You also have the option to have on file a valid credit card number, with our assurance that if there are no damages or lost music, the number will be destroyed (preferred method). Students that choose to pay with a check will receive a refund check in or before mid-October, made out in the student’s name and mailed to the student’s primary address. Marrowstone reserves the right to withhold the entire amount of the damage deposit if damages are assessed.
CANCELLATION POLICY
-The Tuition deposit is non-refundable for students that do not attend Marrowstone.
- 50% of tuition will be forfeit for cancellations less than 21 days prior to arrival.
- 100%
of tuition will be forfeit for cancellations less than 14 days prior to arrival.
- Tuition is non-refundable for students that withdraw after arrival.
Financial Aid
Marrowstone Summer Music offers scholarships and work-study programs to assist students. Financial aid applicants must fill out the financial aid form and submit it with all application materials. Successful applicants must reply within two weeks of receiving the acceptance letter, or risk losing the scholarship offer.
Awards are based on a combination of ability and financial need. Normally scholarships do not cover the entire cost of room and board, but exceptions may be made in extreme cases.
Work-Study In return for financial aid, students may apply to take a work-study position at Marrowstone. Available positions include:
- Counselor - Assist in planning and organizing group activities, writing/printing an activities schedule, enforcing Marrowstone policies and helping students with any specific questions. Counselors will be in continual contact with the Marrowstone administrative staff, and will serve as a conduit between students. Counselors will receive full tuition/housing scholarship administration. (Only available to students 18-23 years old, with at least one year of college experience.)
- Library Assistant/Usher - Librarian: Assist in preparation work for the festival, including photo-copying music, editing parts, and packing up the library. While at the festival, librarians are expected to assist the head librarian. This includes replacing lost music and getting chamber music to its appropriate chamber group. (Only available to Seattle-area residents.) Usher: Assist before and duringstudent and faculty performances. You are allowed to sit in the audience during the performance.
- Stage Crew/Usher - Stage Crew: Assist in all areas of stage set-up at the festival. Includes moving equipment and working with the University staff. Usher: Assist before and during student and faculty performances. You are allowed to sit in the audience during the performance.
Work study students arrive early to Marrowstone on Saturday July 26th to assist with set up. Librarians and Stage Crew students will also have office hours in the Marrowstone office in Seattle in the months prior to and the week after Marrowstone. Students applying for work-study should make sure they are available and in town in June and July. If accepted, more information on specific dates and duties will be included in the Work Study Award letter.
Getting Here
By Car From I-5, take exit number 252. You’ll want to turn on N Samish Way, and follow the signs to WWU. When driving up Bill McDonald Parkway, please observe the speed limits, as this is a heavily patrolled street. Turn left on West College Way. When you get to stop sign at the top of the hill, turn right on Highland Drive. Stay to the right. Highland turns into High St. The Performing Arts Center is on the left, by the large orange "mosquito" sculpture.
**Please note** On weekdays High St is blocked off and you cannot drive directly up to the Performing Arts Center. Instead, continue to the left via West Campus Way and Garden St, turn right on Oak St and go two blocks to the public parking lot at the top of the hill; see the Campus map.
By AirThe region's main airport is Seattle-Tacoma (Sea-Tac) International Airport. Check with your local travel agent for more information on connecting flights with Horizon or United Express to the small, Bellingham International Airport. From either the Bellingham or SeaTac airports, you are responsible for making your own shuttle arrangements to our designated pickup location (the Bellingham Val-U-Inn), from where Marrowstone staff will transport you to the WWU campus. By TrainAmtrack provides service along the west coast of the United States and Canada. There is an Amtrak train route that serves Portland, Seattle, Bellingham and Vancouver, BC, and you can learn more about train service at the Amtrak website. From the train station, students will be transported to the WWU Campus by Marrowstone Staff.
Getting Around Bellingham An extensive city-wide bus system operates seven days a week with frequent stops service is available to other Whatcom County locations.
Arrivals and Departures
Please note: Work study students arrive early to Marrowstone to assist with set-up. If you are applying for a work-study position, please wait to purchase airline tickets or make shuttle reservations until you have been notified of your work study status.
All students traveling by air or train must report all flight and shuttle information to the Marrowstone Coordinator on their Travel Information form (included in their acceptance packet) by June 15th, 2008.

Strong players will audition for orchestra placement immediately after arrival and check-in. Wind instruments will audition following our Welcome BBQ and Convocation in the PAC Concert Hall. Audition times will be assigned randomly by the Marrowstone office.
Signs on Campus will direct you to the check-in sites. Students will first check into their housing at Kappa Ridgeway Hall. Once they have their keys and have put their belongings in their room, they will make their way down the hill to the Performing Arts Center (PAC) foyer to pick up their arrival packet. The PAC is the building to the left of the giant orange mosquito sculpture as you walk down the street.
Departures Departures will follow the final Sunday Orchestra Concerts on August 10th, which will end at approximately 5:30 pm. Students flying home should plan to leave directly after the concert. Marrowstone will provide transportation to the Bellingham Val-U-Inn, from where the Bellaire Airporter shuttle will take you to Sea-Tac Airport, a journey of three hours. Students will need to schedule flights departing Sea-Tac on Sunday no earlier than 11:00 p.m. If this is not possible, please contact the Marrowstone office (206.362.2300/ marrowstone@syso.org) to arrange accommodation on campus Sunday night and transportation to the airport on Monday morning. Please note there will be an additional fee of $50 for this option. Students requesting Sunday stay-over must notify the Marrowstone Coordinator by June 15th, 2008 either on the Travel Information from their acceptance packet, or via email.
All students will check out of their housing before lunch on August 10th, and will spend the remaining hours of the festival in the PAC. Parents that are driving to attend the concerts are encouraged to arrive earlier to find parking and load student belongings prior to 3pm to avoid any traffic back-up after the concert. |
